One of Paul's hobbies combines investigative skills and real estate tools (such as metal detectors and GPS). Paul locates and inventories official survey marks for two government organizations: the National Geodetic Survey and the NC Geodetic Survey. Benchmarks take many forms, but the most familiar are the bronze disks you have seen on mountain tops or embedded in a courthouse wall.	BOUNDARY MONUMENT #35. In 1887, a series of granite markers was placed along the North Carolina/Virginia state line. Marker 35 had never been recovered, and there were only vague clues to its location. Paul undertook the challenge and discovered the marker on the shore of Kerr Lake, where it has been doing its job for 120 years—silently marking a border.
